Flying drones in Germany

If you're planning to fly in Germany, make sure to check local drone laws first.

If you're not sure which rules apply, just read this short summary!
Keep in mind, it is just a summary, not legal advice. Stay safe and always follow the local regulations when flying.

  • Registration Requirement

    All drone operators must register with the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) regardless of drone weight. A registration number must be displayed on the drone.

  • Insurance Requirement

    Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for all drone operations in Germany.

  • Visual Line of Sight

    Drones must be operated within visual line of sight unless special permission is obtained.

  • Maximum Flight Altitude

    Maximum altitude is limited to 120m above ground level.

  • Distance from People

    Maintain a safe distance from uninvolved persons. For drones over 250g, stay at least 30m horizontally from people.

  • No-Fly Zones

    Prohibited areas include airports (1.5km radius), military areas, natural reserves, government buildings, and other restricted zones. Check the official DFS drone app before flying.

  • Pilot Competency

    For drones between 250g and 2kg, pilots must complete the A1/A3 online training. For drones over 2kg, an A2 certificate of competency is required.

  • Night Flight Restrictions

    Flying at night requires special authorization and lighting that ensures the drone is visible.

  • Privacy Considerations

    Respect privacy rights. Do not record or photograph people without consent, and avoid flying over private property.
